Blending Creativity into Your Working World

Over the years I found myself at times struggling with where work starts and stops. I’d don a corporate suit and I was ready for the corporate world (or at least that’s what my emotions were in cahoots with my brain about). Somewhere in there I got lost in the busy-ness of my day, I’d schedule what at times felt like an endless array of meetings with colleagues, my team: collectively and then 1:1’s. There would be days when I’d look out the window and think, wow - what a beautiful day. Maybe I’ll leave work, and get home, God forbid, before it’s dark. Here’s a quick life hack that, when voiced, makes complete sense to anyone out there that’s managed teams, had 1:1 meetings or quick catch ups with colleagues and booked a meeting room to do so…GO OUTSIDE, sit on the grass, the stairs, in the cafe, go for a walk - check out the local area. Make your meeting matter. Research shows that (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27321998) exercising significantly helps shift our brain into information retention and creative juice flowing mode. So, as a call to action:Pull out your Calendar, adopt a mindset of starting with manageable pieces. Look at your work week ahead. Choose a meeting, any one of them that makes sense (you don’t need a whiteboard, confidential quite space etc) to transition from the lunch room, typical cafe downstairs or a booked room and take your brains and creativity out for a walk. Your team and your body will like you all the more for doing so. Do it now. Pick one.
